FOR EASTER SEALS CAMP WINFIELD

Over 1,500 Tired Soles Celebrated the End of 24 Hours of Fun and
Fundraising for Okanagan Children and Youth

Kelowna, BCAt 10:00 AM Sunday June 13th, the horn blew ending the 5th annual Okanagan Money Mart 24 Hour Relay for the Kids, raising $102,400.00 cash pledges and donations split between the BC Lions Society’s Easter Seals Camp Winfield, and the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs’ ArrowFlight Outdoor Program. We received an additional In Kind support resulting in an accumulative total of $202,629.00.  Runners and walkers circled the Apple Bowl Stadium relay-style for 24 hours straight beginning Saturday at 10:00 AM for 24 hours ending at 10:00 AM Sunday June 13, 2010.  The weather was fantastic allowing the participants and Relay guests enjoyed to enjoy the Kidzone, a volleyball tournament, a wacky relay races, live bands, late-night activities, along with food and beverage at the Hospitality Tent.

The top fundraising team was the team from Century 21 Assurance Realty Centurions raising $19,359.00. The next top fundraising team was Kelowna FlightCraft raising $4,776.00 and the third highest fundraising team was The Grasshoppers raising $3,970.  Thank you to all the teams who participated and raised funds to send kids to camp.

Half the cash donations go to support the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs’ Camp ArrowFlight, situated outside of Armstrong, BC. Camp ArrowFlight provides children and youth in the Okanagan with the opportunity to learn about the environment, the importance of being part of a team and about themselves through programming based on recreation, adventure and experiential learning. Like all Boys and Girls Clubs, Camp ArrowFlight creates a safe, supportive environment where children and youth experience new opportunities, overcome barriers, build positive relationships and develop confidence and skills for life.

The balance of the funds go to the Easter Seals Camping Program which sends children with disabilities to Camp Winfield for one-week camping experiences each summer at no cost to their families. Easter Seals Camps give children an opportunity to build their confidence and independence, to spend time with other children with similar challenges, and gives them a sense of freedom and success sometimes not possible anywhere else.

The Okanagan Money Mart 24 Hour Relay For The Kids is produced by the Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs and the BC Lions Society for Children with Disabilities.
